The interior and exterior finishes of a pool can give it a new look and a longer lifespan. Some of the pool finishes include;

- Tiles
- Aggregate
Each one of these finishes is accompanied by a collection of materials, textures and colours.
Pool finishes can be done from a new inground pool and pool renovation. When doing this make sure to select a design that will complement its aesthetic.
Why Pool Finishing Matters
Pools need to be properly sealed and protected. This is due to the permeable nature of concrete and gunite that are used in the construction of pools and also natural tear and wear because of water, chemicals and exposure to sunlight.
Pool finishing helps to eliminate water leakage, gives it a new look and longer lifespan that takes time before they need to be fixed again.
There are three main types of pool finishes one can choose from.
Plaster Finish
Plaster finishes are said to be the oldest technique of pool finishing since the early ’60s. It’s a mixture of white cement, water and marble sand or silica.
Plaster gives the pool a smooth classic appearance and is economical which can last up to 5 years or more before it starts to chip off. There are two subtypes of plaster finishes
Standard Plaster
Standard plaster is mostly white or light grey and gives the water that classic aqua and tropical design that is admirable by many people.
Coloured Plaster
The cloured plaster is somehow tinted and appears a bit dark, mostly grey or blue and gives a natural lagoon aesthetic.
A plaster that is mixed with dyes ensures the pool has a good dimension on the poolscape and produces a grey and enticing blue tint finish.
Aggregate Finishes
With the advancement in pool finishes, aggregate finishing is the new generation that has greatly influenced the new designs and surface of the pools.
This combination is achieved by mixing white plaster and granite or glass beads to give a unique interior or exterior surface of the pool.
Aggregate finishes are gaining popularity as they furnish a luxurious pool surface that is more stain and chemical resistant.
They are nicely decorated to offer a collection of beautiful colours and textures. There are two types of aggregate finishes namely,
Polished aggregate finish
Coloured stones like marble, granite and quartz are crushed and hand-applied using a trowel on the pool shell. They are then polished until a fine smooth surface is attained. The results will be a decorative glow that will extend the plaster life up to 20years with timeless beauty and classic designs.
Exposed aggregate finish
The use of tiny river pebbles and glass beads are hand-applied by a qualified craftsman to bring out the true nature of exposed aggregate.
In case the surface is still wet, it can be power washed with mixtures of water and muriatic acid to get rid of the top layer and expose the glass beads within.
Tiles Finish
Tiles is one of the most durable materials used in pool finishing. They can be applied along the waterline of the pool, the interior of the pool and on the floor or the steps of the pool.
Tiles are expensive and take a long time to install but if installed properly they will never be replaced. They are known to be the longest-lasting material for pool surfaces.
